Dr. Mengjie Xiong

The pianist and educator Dr. Mengjie Xiong leads a versatile musical journey on national and international scenes. As a performer, she appeared in concerts and festivals throughout North America and Europe, with programs ranging from the standard repertoire to new music.

In addition to her solo performances, she collaborated with other instruments including choir, cello, violin, voice, and oboe. In 2015, she was invited to perform with the Chinese traditional instrument guzheng at the Chinese New Year’s Concert in Montreal. Equally passionate about piano four-hand and two-piano repertoire, her recent projects include two-piano concerts in Montreal and Toronto, collaboration with local composers, and recording of the Canadian piano duet collection The Northern Lights at the artistic residency of Orford Musique.

Dr. Xiong received her Doctoral of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) degree in piano performance at the University of Toronto under the tutelage of Marietta Orlov. Her research on Claude Debussy’s Préludes led her to present at the conference Dialogues: Analysis and Performance, held at McGill University in 2021. Dr. Xiong is the recipient of numerous awards including the Orford Artist’s Residency Fellowship in 2020, the University of Toronto Fellowship from 2015 to 2019, and the Zoya Solod Memorial Scholarship in 2013.

Besides performing, Dr. Xiong is a devoted piano pedagogue. Her teaching aims to help students of all ages and levels to develop a comprehensive understanding of music, to establish efficient practicing skills, and to play the piano with enjoyment and musicality. She is a certified teacher of the Quebec Music Teachers Association and an affiliate at l’École de musique Vincent D'Indy. She also taught in music institutions including the Piano Pedagogy Program of the University of Toronto and the McGill Music Conservatory.
